How many fish can the Dorje Pond be a safe home for?
First, we have to know our pond's dimensions:
POND DIMENSIONS
20ft x 6ft x 3ft = 360 cubic feet
POND VOLUME
360 cubic feet = 2692 gallons (US)
GENERAL RECOMMENDATION
Fish breeders and experts generally recommend 1 gallon per 1-inch fish, meaning a 10-gallon tank can safely hold 10 1-inch fish. However, pearlscale owners should make allowances for their fish's growth of up to 3-inches.
Fish experts also recommend changing 20-30% of water everyday, because pearlscales defecate a lot and are susceptible to water changes caused as a result of their defecation.
Given the size of the Dorje pond, it would not be possible to change so much water everyday. Also given the fact our fish will grow, and because our tank is not a new tank (which the fish experts base their recommendations on), we are therefore working with the rule of 10 gallons per 3-inch fish.
Therefore:
2692 gallons divided by 10 gallons = 269 fish
269 fish minus 20 fish (as an allowance for the sucker fish we already have) = 249 fish
249 fish minus 50 fish (as an allowance for water pollution by fish pellets, ammonia) = 200 fish
OUR RECOMMENDATION FOR THE DORJE POND
Based on our research, we recommend 200 fish with a 10% water change every 5 days.

What kind of fish do we currently have in the Dorje Pond?
- 88x Pearlscales (from Ipoh)
- 2x Leopard High-Fin Pleco
- 10x Big Julii Corydoras
- 10x Albino Algae Eater
Why is it important to know where our fish come from?
Pearlscales bred in Japan, Taiwan or China may be more delicate and less accustomed to our water. Pearlscales bred in different locations may also prove to be aggressive with one another. Care must be taken when we get more pearlscales in the future, to note their country of origin.
